Today, I got started using Photoshop CS and Illustrator CS, both by Adobe. Using "real" Photoshop was easier than for some as I have had a bit of experience with Elements. However, I did not know how to use the pen tool because it isn't included in Elements! I also have no idea what I'm doing in Illustrator. I've played around a bit with it, but I still don't have a clue about any of it. I'm going to look for some tutorials to start getting used to the basics. If you want to learn some Photoshop stuff, check out Bert Monroy's weekly video - some of the pictures in my Flickr photostream were made using his techniques, but most of them came from How To Cheat In Photoshop Elements (which is actually co-written by my Chromatically Challenged Father).

Photoshop has gotten a bad rep over the years. Once used as a last-minute salvaging tool for photographers, the increasingly-popular Adobe software has found itself being sorely abused by amateurs and, sad to say, professionals alike.

The Telegraph counts down some of the most infamous photography fakes to date. From obviously bad cloning to clever photo-merging, these hoaxes will serve as a reminder to the addage: "Absolute power corrupts absolutely". Probably the most forgivable of the bunch is the famous "Fairies" photo from 1917 (seen above) simply for the fact that it was low-tech method that required some manual work and creativity.

I dread the day when Photoshop is available to anyone and everyone. Oh wait, it already is.

Okay, I got several questions. The most people want to know how they can do blogcomments automaticaly.

Well, the best is, to do it manually but of course you can do it with a tool. In the www you can find several good tools to do blogcomments. At the moment I am using autoblog2008 for wordpress (this is also available for typepad).

This tool is for free, but you can only get it as a member of SEO Black Hat Forum.

With this tool you can do blogcomments just with one click! Just choose the file, where the tool can find the blog list. Write your Name / Keyword, E-Mail and the URL and finaly your comment.

Be creativ with the comment text, choose something like "Hello Buddy, you have got a nice blog. Can you tell me the name of the theme? I like it."

The most moderated blogs will publish a comment like that! Belive me. Don´t spam the comments with links or comments like "Nice Post". Just only take a link from the URL - that is enough, when you post this to 500 dofollow blogs.

Of course this tool will work with a proxy, you can use for example Tor.

Have fun with this tool.

This band has had more ties to all things major rock than pretty much most anyone. They've had the official endorsement of Paul Stanly of KISS. They've had such members as Danny Carey (drummer for TOOL) and Maynard James Keenan (singer of TOOL, A Perfect Circle, and Puscifer to name a few).

These guys are definately worth a YouTube vid (see attached vid on the flip side of the link).

Not only that, but you need to see them in person. If you like GWAR and such, then you're gonna like Green Jello…I mean Green Jelly!

So we have just been informed by one of our faithful followers, Monkey of Rot Gut Glory, that Green Jelly will be making a stop in Springfield on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at Ground Xero!

Here are two pictures of the alternator and the clutch basket rubbing on the alternator wire sleeve

Here are two pictures of the alternator and the clutch basket rubbing on the alternator wire sleeve nut. There doesn't appear to be any wear on the inside of the alternator, so I may just leave it and use it. You can see the clutch basket wear on the sleeve nut. It's not so bad, and should be fine. It's just a matter of finding the cause.

[caption id="attachment_29" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Alternator Warpage"][/caption]
[caption id="attachment_28" align="alignright" width="300" caption="Clutch Basket Wear on Sleeve Nut"][/caption]

During this project and on my 1972 TR6Rv project as well, I am trying to fabricate as many of the specialty tools as I can because they get a fortune for these things.

[caption id="attachment_30" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Clutch Slotted Nut Screwdriver"][/caption]

The first one I made was the slotted clutch spring screwdriver. It was quite easy really. We have a bucket of 1/8" thick by 8" long steel left over from a project that has come in most handy. I simply measured the width of the slotted clutch spring screws and hit the steel on the grinder until it was the correct width. Then I cut the 1/4" slot on the mill. Thanks to my brother Tom for the help on the mill. He's good - me... not so much. Then I dressed up the tip to resemble a screwdriver on the grinder and there you have it.

[caption id="attachment_31" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Clutch Slotted Nut Screwdriver In Action"][/caption]

The next tool was the large socket needed to undo the mainshaft sprocket. A 1-1/2" socket is needed (actually a hair big due to the nut being Whitworth, but we'll make due) and it also needs to be a deep socket as well. Purchasing a 1-1/2" deep socket is a costly endeavor. So, after much searching for a cheap option, it was off the Cheap Tool Heaven - Harbor Freight!!! I picked up a set of Pittsburgh large impact sockets on sale for $28.00. Then, I put the needed socket in the lathe and cut it in half so I could add a piece of pipe to it to make the socket deeper.

[caption id="attachment_32" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Transmission sprocket nut wrench pieces"][/caption]

Here it is after cutting and before welding.

[caption id="attachment_33" align="alignleft" width="300" caption="Transmission sprocket nut wrench"][/caption]

Here it is after welding and ready to use. I'm holding it with my glove because it is still hot as hell from welding it all together. It turned out great and a quick blip with the impact wrench and the main drive sprocket nut was free and suffered no damage from the tool. If I though the tool would damage the nut, I would have made further modifications, but I didn't need to.

I did have to break down and purchase the timing side camwheel extractor and the crankshaft pinion extractor because I am not foolish enough to try to remove the timing gears with any other tool. Those are some brittle gears - ask me how I know. Ok, I used a screwdriver on the '72 TR6Rv gears and $68.00 later I had a new replacement exhaust gear to replace my foolishly broken one. Live and learn. Those special tools are special for a reason.

Next up is the transmission teardown, a clutch basket mystery and the cause of the above clutch basket rub.

Oh yeah - I called the previous owner again about the missing parts. Guess what??? He hasn't returned my call. In the mean time, I've gotten a messed up clutch side cover and a messed up primary cover off eBay for cheap. I though I'd get them just incase this previous owner doesn't come through (which I'm really not getting warm fuzzies about).

[caption id="attachment_22" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Neurocards"][/caption]

Die TRIPLE-I ist eine Konferenz "for Knowledge Management, New Media Technology and Semantic Systems" und findet in Graz in Österreich statt.

[caption id="attachment_19" align="alignnone" width="128" caption="Eröffnung der TRIPLE-I"][/caption]

Don't you love it when you end up at a random bar and listen to some band you've never heard of before, and discover that they're freakin' brilliant?! So much so that not only do you pester them after the gig, buy one of their CDs, listen to it on repeat for the next week, but then hunt them down to do an interview for your website.

Well maybe not so much the last bit - but thats pretty much what I did after seeing the Melbourne trio Damn The Maps play live. I just couldn't get enough of their debut release 'Input Output,' it's just so addictively great. I dunno which is a more apt description of their work - catchy pop songs that rock, or good rockin' songs that pop.
Anyway, I got in touch with singer/bassist Martin who was able to enlighten me a bit further on the inner workings of Damn the Maps.

Loud Noise and Pictures: Describe the band as if you were making a trailer for a Hollywood blockbuster.
Martin Green: Nick, Mark and Martin formed in 2005 via a Melbourne musician's website. Martin had about 80 songs written at the time and had split from two Australian based line-ups. After auditioning many guitarists and drummers, he was delighted to discover that both Mark and Nick could not only play well, but had very similar ideals to his own. Since then Damn The Maps have only gone forward. They recorded several EP's and in 2008 they released their debut album 'Input Output.' They joined with Vent Music and Amphead and released physically in Australia and digitally worldwide. They share a love for a good song, that's pretty much it in a nutshell.
Sound wise, Damn the maps have a relatively commercial sound with a little bit of distortion here and a little eeriness there. They are most commonly compared to Radiohead, Tool and Pink Floyd. They have an honest sound. I.e. they write about what's going on around them day to day.
Their hopes are pretty simple, to write great albums and play great shows. Coming soon to grungy stadium near you…

LNaP: To me, Damn the Maps music evokes the sounds of other notable Aussie pop/rock acts such as Jebediah, Something For Kate, Pollyanna and Eskimo Joe. Do other Australian bands influence your work, or does it come from somewhere else?
MG: Unfortunately I can't say that we are influenced by much in the way of Australian music. We have been more drawn to international influences and a far more international sound than what I feel is produced in the southern hemisphere.
Our influences go as far back as The Byrds, Beatles, Zeppelin, Sabbath, Neil Young etc to The Decemberists, Deftones, Radiohead, The Shins, and Grandaddy. I'm personally heavily influenced by great lyricists - Roger Waters, Colin Meloy, even Eminem. I just don't feel that the lyrics coming from our biggest musical exports are as influential as the best internationals. You won't find any unicorn references on our album sorry.

LNaP: You've had a few of your songs get some rotation on JJJ, how hard is it for an up and coming Australian band to get enough recognition to receive airplay? Is it luck, hard work, or simply having the right connections?
MG: I think that it all comes down to a good song. Radio stations like Triple J have staff that are bombarded with hundreds and thousands of singles, EP's and albums a week and they churn through what they can to try and find the good stuff. I'm sure that many songs make it for many reasons whether it be the reputation of the label, their producer, their artwork, their persistence or simply the quality of the songs. We have a small independent label, are self produced, have independent artwork and we have had a song from all three of our releases played on Triple J. So hopefully I can conclude that we must be doing something that they like and I hope that that something is being able to write a good song.

LNaP: How would you describe the current Australian musical scene Damn the Maps are a part of?
MG: I think the biggest thing I've noticed is the reduction in major signed artists and a huge increase in independent music. Despite our obvious disdain for certain aspects of technology, I also think that the new software based studios and home set-ups along with services tailored specifically for the independent musician have given many artists the chance to realise their dream (or at least be able to release a product) This should in turn reduce the amount of unrecognised genius in the world. (I hope) I think it's brilliant to see independent artists living off their work and winning awards at the mainstream events. Also I think that the internet has changed everything. It's making the music industry a lot more interactive. Fans are able to vote online for all sorts of gig line-ups and awards. It's not so much about who has simply sold the most physical records anymore.

LNaP: How important are websites like Myspace and Triple J Unearthed to new unsigned bands today? Do you think it is a reaction to shows like Popstars and Idol that people now think they can be successful via popularity rather than talent? Do things like Myspace friend numbers translate into record sales/increased numbers at gigs?
MG: Myspace is certainly a valuable tool for us for networking and allowing people to be exposed to our music. Rather than the old days of waiting forever to be picked up by a huge record company that then spends innumerable dollars promoting a band to the world and then waiting for people to come to that band, Myspace allows the band to go to the people. If you have plenty of time to browse people's profiles and take the time to notice them, they in turn notice you. We get such amazing feedback from 'friends' from all around the world, simply because we took the time to find them. Whether this translates into record sales and gig attendance, we can't yet say as it is still quite early. However it is definitely a great way to stay in contact. Also we notice that people that have seen us at gigs have rushed home and become our friends so as to stay in touch with us. This is very handy.
Some bands/people become very successful simply via exposure alone. It's what they do next that decides how long they remain popular. OK GO was a brilliant example with their treadmill video on Youtube. Fortunately they could back up their video with a pretty catchy album.

LNaP: Since Input Output's release in May, the band has been touring pretty hard, how have audiences reacted to it all – and how are you all holding up considering you're only about halfway through the tour?
MG: Actually we have been doing sporadic touring. I.e. travelling a few days at a time and returning home. However our full tour begins in October when we head to New Zealand. We should then start getting to know how successful things are going. At the recent shows, of the people that have been coming, the response has been fantastic. We now hope that word of mouth allows the Damn the Maps name to spread and in turn pull more people to the shows.

LNaP: The album seems to have a recurring theme – that of a more natural existence or better time. Songs cover topics addressing anti-technology, perceived beauty, and the good old days/simpler times etc. Was there a conscious effort to tackle these themes or am I way off the mark?
MG: There is definitely a recurring theme. A lot of this album was written when I was holding down a corporate day job. I was travelling into the city every day to show up and log on at places that were very different from how and where I grew up. I would find myself surrounded by these 40 something year old suits complaining about their jet skis and wardrobes being too small and how their air conditioning sucks far too much power from their aircraft carrier of a car. I eat in various cafes and watch them systematically install security cameras in every cornice and the ever popular LCD TV screen to distract you with product while you eat. I'm bombarded with meaningless emails and surrounded by mobile phones, media players and computers the whole day, all of which send us into a panic when they break down or buzz with a new trivial trick or text message. I grew up on a farm where I would cycle 18kms to my friend's house with my $20 bass guitar on my back so we could sit on his deck and try and play Jimi Hendrix songs through his 6 watt champ.
There was not so much a conscious effort to create this theme, it's more like I couldn't help it because I was surrounded by it day in day out.

LNaP: Input Output features some beautifully quirky artwork from German artist Mateo, how did the band get turned onto his work?
MG: We were put into contact with Mateo via a very good friend of ours. We absolutely love his work and are delighted that we could use it for the album. We hope this is mutually beneficial as we feel that an album cover provides great exposure for artists of all levels and at the same time good artwork on an album can draw massive attention to a band. Shapeshifter by Marcy Playground or pretty much any cover done by Hypgnosis is a great example.

LNaP: Once the tour is done, what is in store for the band? Get the hell away from the other guys for a bit, or start working on some new material?
MG: Once we finish the tour, we hope to go straight into the studio. We have a substantial amount of album number 2 already written and we are keen as mustard to start recording again.

Thanks to Martin and the lads from Damn the Maps. Try and get out to one of their shows, or grab their CD 'Input Output' from JB or iTunes.

What do you do when your PC is displaying all the signs of having been infected and/or hacked but yo

What do you do when your PC is displaying all the signs of having been infected and/or hacked but your antivirus and anti-spyware scan reports come back clean?

This was the case for a fella who called me for advice recently. He had done things 'right' -- and by that I mean he has a firewall, he keeps his antivirus definitions up to date, and he runs a couple of anti-spyware applications -- but suspected his machine had been hacked anyway.

He couldn't do things he was used to doing (like deleting a file) and his machine was "really slow."
But according to his scanners, his machine is in perfect shape.

Tip of the day: If you should find yourself in a similar situation there are several steps you can take to help resolve your questions and (hopefully) fix your machine without taking the drastic step of wiping your hard drive, formatting, and reinstalling Windows.

The first step is to use a scanner that isn't installed on your machine. Here's two ways to do that: one, if your antivirus allows it (and most of them do these days), follow its instructions and make an antivirus recovery disk. This is a bootable disk that scans your system before Windows loads.

To use one, put it in your CD tray and restart your machine. A plain-text sentence will appear telling you to "press any key to boot from CD..." When you see it, hit your spacebar or, well, any other key, and then follow the instructions. When it's finished, remove the CD and restart your machine again.
[note: you may also use a properly prepared USB thumb drive. Click here to read my article on how to do that.]

A second method is to use an online scanner. I have a list, with links, of several good online scans on my website, here. Quite a few of the online scanning tools will try to sell you their full application, but you're under no obligation to buy. The big advantage to these two methods lies in the fact that they have not been compromised, or altered, and the files and scanners on your machine may be-- the modification being done by the virus or hacker.

Another thing to do is scroll down to my "Today's free link" and download HiJack This! Run it and dump the result into a .txt file (there's instructions for this) and then register on one of the HiJack This! forums (there's instructions for this too) and post your results there. Before too long, an expert anti-malwareologist [don't bother looking: I just now made that word up] will have looked over the intricacies, and will post his analysis and instructions. These guys (and gals) are really, really good at what they do, and you can trust their answers.

Also run CheckDisk with the "r" "f" switches (this probably will require a reboot) to make sure the problem is not your hard drive.
Click on Start >Programs >Accessories >Command prompt. In the white-on-black window type "chkdsk /r /f" (no quotes, and be sure to include the spaces). You may be told that certain files are in use, and asked if you want to "schedule this at the next reboot Y/N?" Type in a "y" and restart your machine.

Hopefully these efforts will be rewarded with a rejuvination of your machine, and you will be back in business again. If not, you have my sympathy. You may have a rootkit and then your best solution is to re-format your hard drive and reinstall everything, or enlist the aid of a professional

Today's free link: HijackThis™ is a free utility which quickly scans your Windows computer to find settings that may have been changed by spyware, malware or other unwanted programs. HijackThis does not clean infections, but creates a report, or log file, with the results of the scan. A large community of users participates in online forums, where experts help interpret the scan results to clean up infected computers.

I've found the accessories I was looking for after many years, in a tradeshow under a strange booth, you've guesses it: made like a hood. It's the helmet of 3 wise brothers who decided to supply only the best accessories for digital photographer and videographer. Of course they remembered me I had hovered around the booth for the complete trade show, like a bee around the ripest sunflower. So I asked what is this yellow CF card about...

[caption id="" align="alignleft" width="150" caption="The Hoodman RAW CF card"][/caption]

"The fastest and most reliable card ever" they said. I had heard that soooo many times, "why don't you try it" they offered. I got 2 on that day. Wow, just taking the card in the hand tells you there is something different, it weight close to double the weight of standard cards... And for speed of writing, I can shoot up tp 18 Raw/Full jpg with my Olympus E-3 before we hit a delay, when I only reach 14 with my 133X card and 11 on the Ultra card.... Numbers say it all. And there is also the Firewire/UDMA reader that transfers to your computer with lightning speed...

The other do-not-leave-home-without-it tool is the "Loupe". This Hoodman loupe allows you to shade your view of the viewfinder, allowing a clear view even in bright sunlight. It hangs in your neck with a very comfortable rubber lanyard. When you want to look at your image just push the disply button and put your pyramid shaped loupe on the screen and you see the image without the interference of the light. The loupe is equiped with a focusable eyepiece and covers the full screen. On a recent workshop I've lended my loupe to some students that could not even change the modes on their cameras due to ambient light..

Firefox users:

As a daily (during work) user of digg, I have found a good tool for everyone that finds themselves googling words, error text, etc. whilst searching the web. Or, if you're like me, you read one page, then want to google another word in the current page you're on.

So rather than copying and pasting what you want to search for into a new tab, select the text you want to google, hit the hotkey for Ubiquity (default is ctrl+space), and type "google this", and it will know that 'this' is what you have selected.

The best role of business online is that of interdependency. We’ve all heard the old saying, “No

The best role of business online is that of interdependency. We’ve all heard the old saying, “No man is an island.” When it comes to online business this is especially true.

If a business owner who takes their business into the online world determines they will be self reliant and never accept the help of anyone then that individual will not be in business long enough to change their minds.

It is accepted fact that the greatest tool for long-term exposure to your website is through Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Without it potential customers can’t find you. It is unreasonable to expect that you can adequately develop a website without optimizing your website for the best possible search engine ranking.

Search engines also place a high value on sites that have links placed on existing sites. These ‘backlinks’ demonstrate to search engines that others trust your site. By placing your link on their website these other businesses indicate a trust and recommendation for your site.

In effect the two strategies listed above rely exclusively on what others can do for you when it comes to your online business.

Shirley Temple once proclaimed in her movie Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, “I’m very self-reliant.” American westerns are filled with lines dealing with pulling yourself up by your bootstraps and holding down the fort. Many of us have grown up to believe if we want something done right we have to do it ourselves.

This thinking is in opposition to the rules associated with an online business.

The online world can only exist because people share. Individuals share technology, but the also share links, reviews, blogs, forums and a wide range of other marketing strategies that find a commingling of interdependency.

In online business you are as dependent on others as they may be on you. Unlike the word ‘dependent’, the term interdependent indicates a mutual dependency. In other words you are depending on others to help provide links back to your site while they are equally dependent on you (or others) for the success of their business.

Have you really taken a proactive approach to networking? It’s possible you are reading this today and you’ve never considered asking someone else to place a link to your site on his or her online business site.

It can feel awkward depending on others to achieve online success especially if you’ve been lead to believe reliance on others is also a sign of imposing on their otherwise brilliant generosity.

I suppose it could be a deep-seated sense of pride that makes it hard to consider the need to ask others for help. However, the truth is depending on others is really what has made the Internet possible. The growth of this online world is comprised of a link of computers, networks and servers that are connected in a way that provides the maximum benefit for all.

Building an online business can feel a bit like trying to build a house of cards. Without the ability to rely on the other ‘cards’ around you it is virtually impossible to build.

Interdependence. This is the essence of online business.
