I'll keep this brief.

My head hurts. There's too much noise. It's everywhere. Email, RSS, Tweats, Friendfeed, etc. Political noise getting in the way of the real issues. Facebook noise stopping real communication. There's even noise about noise - search the Twitter stream for "noise" - lots of folks are overwhelmed.

Maybe it's given us all technologically-induced ADD. Who can focus for more than a minute?!?! Try and unplug - it's like quitting smoking or drinking or any bad habit. Your skin crawls, your mind races. Your breathing speeds up, as does your heart. "What's going on? What am I missing?"

Thoreau suggested that our lives are frittered away by detail. "Simplify, simplify."

Which is why I don't post more than once a day and not on weekends - let's give it a rest once in a while.

I love technology. I love what the web has done to improve lives and give people the opportunity to grow beyond the boundaries of their physical communities and learning resources. But PLEASE! Don't you hate when people use their cell phones loudly on the train? Don't you hate it when the TV in the next room is up too loud and you can't read? Don't you hate it when the kid next door is banging on his (drums, guitar, clarinet- whatever) and you can't think? YOU wouldn't make that noise!

So don't.

This week has been my highest week of traffic to date, by a pretty wide margin. So welcome to everyone who's interested in the political conventions and the upcoming election. Many seem to be stumbling upon this blog from Wordpress tag surfing and links from discussion forums like forums.offtopic.com.

I hope you'll consider subscribing to my RSS feed. Nifty software like Google Reader can use RSS feeds to push all the blog content you're interested in out to you in a single window, as opposed to you individually surfing to several different blog sites. It's how i get at least 90% of the news i read every day, and a lot of great commentary.

Long time no post!

It seems that iPhone developers heard what I was claiming in my last post.

The iPhone users around the world are able to get in touch with their feeds even when far from Wi-Fi hotspots. NewsGator has released NetNewsWire for iPhone:

[caption id="attachment_50" align="aligncenter" width="448" caption="NetNewsWire"][/caption]

It's only available for devices with software 2.0 (3G or not), because it can only be downloaded in App Store. It doesn't cost a thing and, so far, woks pretty good. I'm using it with a ruge amount of data: a litte bit more than 2,300 feeds!

I continue thinking that Apple should include this feature in the next version of iTunes: Podcasts and text feeds side-by-side.

By the other hand, I still miss WidSets. I Wish I could use it on my iPhone. Imagine that awesome graphical dashboard in a multitouch 3,5" screen!

Since the last time I posted about my favorite iPhone RSS reader, Phatom Fish has made a couple of updates. The introduction of working share, star and "mark all as read" features have made ByLine by far my favorite RSS reader for the iPhone.

Beyond the features of the iPhone application, the killer feature is ByLine's tight integration with Google Readers auto prioritization feature. Google Reader already surfaces articles to me based on my past reading preference in the "all items stream". ByLine leverages this stream im the client to provide the most interesting items to me when I have a few momemtns to read RSS content.

Continuamos...

Tu diablo fiel:
anja! y entonces, no me ayudaras a sacar un blog?

yo:
Si ombe, no te ponga belicoso ahora.

Tu diablo fiel:

yo:
diablo, vamo a repetano.

Tu diablo fiel:

yo:
no pro. y na, me voy, q tengo trabajo. hablamo y que dios te bendiga.

Tu diablo fiel:
pulsar?

yo:
dime.

Tu diablo fiel:
tu maldita madre! bye.

Paz y Amor:
De acuerdo, cuidate. Yo te bendigo.

I've been a fan of Google Reader for a couple of years now, as it helps me track hundreds of blogs and news sites easily every day. And one of Reader's niftier features allows me to share links to some of the articles I've found interesting on my blog via the "Stuff I Read" feature in the left-hand rail. You can see all those articles and more on my Google "Shared Items" page here.

In time for the political season, Google has added another cool feature, "Power Readers in Politics." On this page, you can read shared articles from both the Barack Obama and John McCain campaigns, as well as track what major political reporters and analysts are reading.

Among the journalists sharing their stories and others are Mark Halperin of Time, John Dickerson of Slate, Mike Allen of Politico and, of course, Arianna Huffington of the Huffington Post.

It's a great starting point to survey the day's political reporting. And with Reader, you can easily subscribe to each feed via RSS so you never miss a post. Highly recommended.

Yeah, it's pretty lame right now. The reason being... well I've used Google reader for the past year. So if I'm adding a blog to a reader, it'll be my google reader. I want to pretend like I'm not completely owned by google but I'm starting to realize that I pretty much am.

You know Google Chrome? People keep talking about it and all that? I haven't jumped on downloading it because google already has enough information to make a clone army of me if they want to but do I really want to give them that much more? Ehhhhh... I don't know.

Also, I've been clicking around Bloglines for a couple of days and I just find it aesthetically crappy. Is there an easy way to change this? Usually if a website isn't transparent on how to change settings, I'm not about to go digging around to find out unless I'm completely addicted to the website for whatever reason.

That being said...

D.P. SATISH writes from New Delhi: In the run-up to the assembly elections in Karnataka and shortly after, B.S. Yediyurappa made an obscene number of visits to mutts and other seats of spirituality, falling at the feet of gurus, godmen and swamijis, big and small, and seeking their blessings to achieve his life's ambition of becoming chief minister.

Now that he is in the saddle, is it payback time?

The conclusion is harsh, perhaps unjust, but inescapable.

The handing over of the Mahabaleshwara Temple in Gokarna (in Uttara Kannada district) to the Ramachandrapur mutt (located in Hosanagar, Shimoga district) on August 14 is the clearest indication yet that our so-called jagadgurus, who shamelessly cross the line from the spiritual to the temporal to the material, are now demanding (and extracting) their pound of the puliyogare.

***

The temple transfer was reportedly made on the basis of documents that the temple was under the purview of the mutt till 1860. But by selectively and clandestinely "privatising" the administration and running of just one temple out of thousands in the State, Team Yedi has in one stroke, as it were, demonstrated that government work under the BJP is not God's work but godman's work.

Documents published in Gauri Lankesh's eponymous tabloid last week show that as recently as April this year, when the State was under President's rule, the muzrai department had asserted that the Mahabaleshwara Temple was a "public temple" and that "there was no legal provision to transfer it to a private party or to a mutt". So what changed between 1 April 2008 and 14 August 2008?

***

Aside from the legality of the temple transfer, the issue throws up six larger questions:

1) If the Gokarna temple was under the purview of the Ramachandrapur mutt till the 1860s, then by extension it can be contended that almost all temples in the State were once a part of some mutt or the other. Is the government ready to outsource the running of all these temples back to the original mutts or claimants? If so, by when? If not, why not?

Is the government ready to allow Kurubas to take over the Sri Krishna temple in Udupi, if the kurubas make a similar demand? Will the Chamundeshwari Temple atop Chamundi Hills and the Sri Ranganatha Temple in Srirangapatna be transferred to Srikantadatta Wodeyar because they were built by the Mysore kings?

2) What is the connection between the Chief Minister's Office and the Ramachandrapur mutt, aside from both being from the same area in Shimoga? Why has the mutt suddenly received preferential treatment, when Wodeyar says the Gokarna temple should have been transferred to the Shringeri Sharada Mutt, which has been around longer than the Ramachandrapur mutt?

3) In interviews, the head of the Ramachandrapur mutt and his devotees have been claiming that the temple transfer is part of a larger bid to clean up Gokarna, also known as Dakshin Kashi. The reference here is to the not-so-holy activities that take place on the holy beaches of Gokarna. If true, does the writ of the State no longer run here? And is only a mutt located in a neighbouring district qualified to rectify that?

4) Does such a midnight transfer of a public property into private hands threaten its democratic DNA? The Mahabaleshwara temple has always welcomed devotees from all castes and religions insides the shrine. They are even allowed to touch the 'Athma Linga' and pray. Is the fear of lower-caste Hindus that they will no longer be allowed inside the 'Garbha Gruha' far-fetched?

5) Above all, the selective transfer raises troubling questions over transparency. As a profitable temple run by the muzrai department, the Gokarna temple's administration, activities, programmes, were open to public scrutiny under the Right to Information Act. Will the public have similar access when a private mutt is given charge? The profits were earlier ploughed into the development of other, "poorer" temples across the State. Will that continue?

(An early indication of the shape of things to come. The mutt's representatives barged into the temple a day after the government issued the order and broke open the hundis. The mutt says it got just Rs 40 lakh; news reports say the collection was four to five times that sum.)

6) Will the Gokarna temple transfer open the floodgates? Sources say some Lingayat mutts are trying to grab at least two dozen profit-making muzrai temples in the State. Since nobody can now accuse Yediyurappa of favouring only Lingayats, will the path be paved by the government? And how much longer before Vokkaliga mutts, and Kuruba mutts, and mutts of other communities start putting in their applications?

***

A website maintained by the Ramachandrapur mutt claims the mutt was established at Gokarna over 1,200 years ago by Adi Shankara who anointed one of his disciples Shree Vidyananda as the first pontiff. It is a mutt affiliated to the Shringeri Sharada Mutt. The heads of the mutt are known by the suffix, Bharati. They also have a title Gokarna Mahamandaladhishwara.

The mutt is mostly frequented by Havyaka Brahmins, a minuscule community scattered over the Western Ghats---in Madikeri, Puttur, Sulya, Kasaragod, Sagar, Hosanagar, Soraba, Siddapura, Sirsi, Yellapura, Kumta, Honnavara and Ankola taluks--who and grow betel nut and spices for livelihood. The total population of Havyaka Brahmins is less than 3 lakhs although a Wikipedia entry pegs the figure at 1 lakh. Half of them now live in Bangalore and other parts of the world.

Generally speaking, heads of the Ramachandrapur mutt heads have always kept to themselves and rarely mingled with the public and politicians.

All that changed in when the present head of the mutt Raghaveshwara Bharti (in picture, left) took charge in the mid 1990s after the death of his predecessor Raghavendra Bharati, who had reigned for 50 years.

Raghavendra Bharati had strictly followed the mutt's traditions. He had never entertained politicians and businessmen, and was known as 'Doorvasa' or 'Jamadagni' because of his mood swings and short fuse. But, he was a scholar and a man of integrity. Nobody had the temerity to question his character, integrity and intentions. He was both feared and respected by his followers.

But the 7th standard pass Raghaveshwara Bharati (born Chaduravalli Hareesha Bhat alias Hareesha Sharma), who reportedly sees some Lingayat and Vokkaliga swamijis as models to emulate, altered the mutt's image and public perception.

Devotees say following his ascent, the mutt became more like a business establishment.

The Shringeri seer is believed to have admonished him for indulging in non–religious and non-spiritual activities. It seems to have had no impact on his ambitions.

Raghaveshwara Bharati is alleged to have opened the doors of the mutt to all manner of people, including politicians, cinema stars, brokers, businessmen, shady journalists, real estate developers, among others. Insiders say some Havyaka Brahmin journalists, jealous of the clout enjoyed by fellow Lingayat and Vokkaliga journalists, used him to increase their clout in the corridors of power.

Result: the real followers of the mutt were made to feel like second-class /grade devotees. Those who questioned him were targetted and silenced.

One more result: From being a seat of learning, the Ramachandrapur mutt slowly became a political hothouse of the RSS-VHP. Not soon after, Raghaveshwara Bharati started dictating terms to BJP leaders.

Overnight, the mutt became the epicentre of the "Save the Cow" movement. The Vishwa Gou Sammelana, organised by the mutt, was telecast over several hours by the Bangalore centre of Doordarshan, with director Mahesh Joshi playing a stellar role in the coverage.

Once almost bankrupt and obscure, the mutt is now said to be worth over Rs 100 crore. Credit of this phenomenal growth should go to the skills of Raghaveshwara Bharati and his coterie, which also includes former top cop T. Madiyal, who headed the Special Task Force to catch Veerappan.

Yediyurappa, who is also from the same Hosanagar area, is one of the latest entrants into the swamiji's fold. He started hobnobbing with him only in 2006. The 2008 assembly polls brought them closer, and the swamiji is believed to have exhorted his followers to vote for the BJP.

The transfer of the temple following the BJP's victory in the elections, comes against this backdrop. Raghaveshwara Bharati was reportedly eyeing Gokarna and its economic potential for a long time. He studied Sanskrit at Gokarna for 12 years and knows the real worth of its temples.

In turn, Yediyurappa believes that the temple-transfer will consolidate BJP vote bank in Malnad.

In divesting the government's muzrai department from the administration of the temple, the BJP ironically has fulfilled a key "secular" demand to keep "State" apart from "Religion", but the fact that it has done so with regard to only one temple, raises more questions than provides answers.

Last Sunday, on a live, one-hour question and answer session on "Chandana", with DD director Mahesh Joshi once again in the frame, Raghaveshwara Bharati looked smug and dismissive.

A caller from Kumta said: 'Beedi nayi bogalidre, devaloka halagalla. Mahaswamigale, thaavu yaarigoo uttara needa-bedi (swamiji needn't answer every barking dog on the temple transfer)". Raghaveshwara Bharati approvingly nodded his head.

Does it mean that people like Siddaramaiah, S. Bangarappa, H.D. Deve Gowda, and Mallikarjuna Kharge, who are openly opposing the transfer, are no better than stray dogs questioning a divine deal?

Still blaming Christians for assassination, Hindu fanatics continue attacks.
NEW DELHI, September 1

Still blaming Christians for assassination, Hindu fanatics continue attacks.

NEW DELHI, September 1 (Compass Direct News) – A Maoist group today claimed responsibility for killing Hindu extremist leader Laxmanananda Saraswati and four of his disciples in Orissa state on August 23, saying that fanatical Hindus’ claims that Christians murdered him were “lies.”

The violence that has claimed the lives of least 36 people, most of them Christians, and destroyed hundreds of churches and homes continued over the weekend as Hindu extremists continued to blame Christians for the killing of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council or VHP) leader.

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of India-Maoist, an extreme Marxist group banned by the Indian government, released a statement today saying that Sangh Parivar, the family of Hindu extremist groups led by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh or RSS, have deliberately misled people about Saraswati’s death.

“The Sangh Parivar leaders like Praveen Togadia have been trying to divert the people by uttering lies that it is not the Maoists but Christian organizations that had carried out the attack on the VHP leader,” the Marxist group stated.

The statement said Saraswati was a “rabid anti-Christian ideologue and persecutor of innocent Christians who was responsible for the burning down of over 400 churches in Kandhamal district alone.”

Saraswati, who had run a campaign against Christian missionaries for several decades in Orissa, was allegedly behind a spate of anti-Christian attacks in Kandhamal district last Christmas season. The violence lasted for more than a week beginning December 24, and killed at least four Christians and burned 730 houses and 95 churches.

The Maoist statement warned the VHP of “more such punishments if it continued violence against religious minorities in the country” and called for a ban on groups linked to the Sangh Parivar, such as the VHP, its youth wing Bajrang Dal, right-wing Hindu political party Shiv Sena and the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

On August 30 private news channel NDTV 24X7 quoted unnamed government sources as saying that their assessment was that Christians had no role in the killing of Saraswati, and that the probe was leading to Maoist culprits.

Christian leaders said that as a result of the violence more tha 50,000 Christians are living as refugees in jungles.

Fresh Attacks

According to the Evangelical Fellowship of India (EFI), today at least two churches and a motorbike were burned and a pastor was beaten in Koraput district.

The Orissa Missionary Movement Church and the Bible Mission Church were set ablaze by mobs in Jeypore town, according to EFI, and also in Jeypore a pastor of the Blessing Youth Mission was attacked.

The state government today said 543 houses had been burned in Kandhamal alone thus far, IANS reported.

Although the number of incidents has come down compared with last week, fresh attacks were reported yesterday. Indo-Asian News Service (IANS) reported today that the violence had spread to three more districts of Orissa.

“Security forces had been deployed in nine districts [of Orissa] since August 23, but policemen are now being deployed in an additional three districts,” Inspector General of Police Pradeep Kapur told IANS.

Security forces had been deployed in the districts of Bolangir, Bargarh, Kandhamal, Gajapati, Ganjam, Koraput, Rayagada, Bhadrak and Kendrapada. Kapur, however, refused to tell the three additional districts where police personnel had been deployed.

Yesterday several churches and houses were burned in Bataguda and Parampanga areas of Kandhamal district, Boriguma area of Koraput district and in parts of Rayagada district, according to IANS.

The Hindu newspaper reported that eight prayer houses were damaged in Kundra area of Koraput district on Sunday.

“Violence erupted in the district following a clash between two groups in Jeypore town on Saturday and five churches were damaged,” the newspaper reported, adding that a curfew was still in force.

Although the violence began more than a week ago, police are still saying they are not able to reach interior villages of Kandhamal. The state government has now reportedly asked for additional central paramilitary forces to control the violence.

While many parts of Orissa remained under curfew today, over 13,000 people were reportedly living in relief centers set up by the state government in seven places in Kandhamal.

‘Reconversions’

With violence continuing with little or no police protection, Christian leaders said many fearful believers have been forcibly “reconverted” to Hinduism.

According to The Indian Express, more than a hundred Christians “reconverted” to Hinduism in Kandhamal on Friday and Saturday (Aug. 29-30).

“I have heard that reconversions are taking place and I am looking into it,” Kandhamal Revenue Divisional Commissioner Satyabarat Sahoo told the newspaper.

A number of reconversions have reportedly taken place in Raikia, Baliguda, Barakhama and others areas of Kandhamal, the newspaper reported.

Dr. Sajan K. George, president of the Global Council of India Christians, told Compass that Hindu extremist groups are “reconverting” Christians by force.

“We have collected evidence and given it to authorities,” he said. “However, the police and other state government authorities are not doing anything.”

George led a sit-in protest with local Christians in front of the state legislative assembly building in state capital Bhubaneswar, and submitted a memorandum to the state governor on Saturday (Aug. 30).

Brahmachari Shankar Chaitanya, successor of the slain Saraswati, asserted that the conversions were “purely voluntary.”

“If misguided people want to come back to Hinduism they will do so, and it is our duty to extend all necessary help and embrace them,” Chaitanya told The Indian Express.

‘Punish the Killers’

Christians noted that the violence by VHP extremists is in a state ruled by a coalition of Biju Janata Dal party and the BJP.

A delegation comprising a noted filmmaker and Christians from various denominations today submitted a memorandum to the Indian President Pratibha Patil demanding action against the VHP and other groups for leading mobs to kill and attack Christians.

The delegation urged the president to invoke Article 355 of the constitution, which states that the federal government has a duty to protect states against external aggression and internal disturbance.

The delegation included film director Mahesh Bhatt; Dr. Abraham Mathai, vice chairman of the Maharashtra State Minorities Commission; Dr. John Dayal, member of the National Integration Council of India; Mehmood Madani, member of Parliament; Archbishop Raphael Cheenath from Orissa; Delhi Archbishop Vincent Concessao; the Rev. Dr. Babu Joseph, spokesperson of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India; Joseph Dias from the Catholic Secular Front; the Rev. Madhu Chandra of the All India Christian Council, and Jenis Francis of the Federation of Catholic Associations.

“More than 50,000 Christians are living as refugees following the violence in Orissa,” Mathai told reporters. “All the political parties are sitting as mute spectators.”

Christians make up 2.4 percent of the state’s population, or 897,861 of the 36.7 million people.

Mengakses Informasi Melalui RSS
Penggunaan internet untuk mendapatkan informasi bukanlah sesuatu yan

Mengakses Informasi Melalui RSS

RDF Site Summary , The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) untuk RSS versi 1.0

· Blog, contoh: www.bloglines.com

· Bookmark interfaces, contoh: Mozilla Firefox ??live?? bookmarks

· Email alerts , contoh: Yahoo Mail

· Email clients , contoh: Outlook Express, Thunderbird.

· Aplikasi desktop standalone, contoh: FeedReader

Langkah-langkah mengakses RSS feeds adalah sbb.:

Menggunakan RSS viewer.

Mengambil informasi.

Melihat content informasi.

RSS Toolkit for ASP.NET 2.0 provides a ton of great support for both consuming and exposing RSS f

RSS Toolkit for ASP.NET 2.0 provides a ton of great support for both consuming and exposing RSS from ASP.NET 2.0 applications, and ships with full source code.

Updatedl download here.

Some of the features/scenarios in the new RSS Toolkit include:

RSS Data-binding Control Support

You can now declaratively databind any ASP.NET control to the new RSSDataSource control provided in the toolkit. For example, to build a simple blog post aggregator for my blog you could follow the below steps with the free Visual Web Developer tool:

1) Create a new blank page

2) Drag/Drop the standard ASP.NET DataList control on the page, choose the “New DataSource” option from the smart-task:

3) Select the RSSDataSource control to bind to (note: this will automatically be populated in the datasource dialog window if the RSSDataSource control has been added to the VS toolbox):

4) In the RSSDataSource dialog that pops-up, type in the URL to the RSS feed you want to databind to:

5) The RSSDataSource control will then request the schema for the RSS feed and expose it to VS – which will then populate the <asp:datalist> control with an <itemTemplate> that is automatically populated with data-binding expressions for each of the RSS schema fields from the remote RSS source:

6) You can then switch into template editing mode in the WYSIWYG designer, or go into source-view to remove some of the fields and just leave the RSS fields you want to bind to. Here is a sample page with a DataList template that binds to the link and title RSS item fields:

<%@ Register Assembly="RssToolkit" Namespace="RssToolkit" TagPrefix="RssToolkit" %>

    <title>ScottGu Feed</title>

        </RssToolkit:rssdatasource>

    </div>

    </form>

</body>

</html>

7) I can then run the page and get this output:

As you can see above, the DataList is now bound to the data returned from the remote RSS feed on my site.

What is really cool is that the RSSDataSource control will cache the RSS data to avoid hitting it remotely on each request – so that you can efficiently add this type of blog aggregation functionality to your site and not have to worry about your performance slowing down.

Strongly Typed RSS API Support

The RSS Toolkit also adds support for creating a strongly-typed object model over a remote RSS feed. This allows you to program against RSS data in a clean, easy way. You can do this one of two ways:

1) Using the rsssdl.exe utility that ships with the toolkit. This is a command-line tool that generates a strongly-typed class library based on a provided RSS URL feed (sort of like wsdl.exe does for web-services). For example, I could use it against my ScottGu RSS blog feed like so to generate a Scottgu.cs file containing C# classes that provide a strongly-typed object model around it:

I could then add the generated “scottgu.cs” file to my project and instantiate and use the class framework to programmatically databind the RSS channel’s items against a GridView (note that each of the Items is strongly typed as a "ScottGuChannelItem" -- and has a strongly-typed object model based on the schema of the RSS feed):

ScottGuChannel channel = ScottGuChannel.LoadChannel();

GridView1.DataSource = channel.Items;

GridView1.DataBind();

or alternatively:

2) The RSS toolkit also ships with a new ASP.NET 2.0 build-provider that allows you to declaratively add .rssdl file definitions in your app_code directory. For example like so:

<rssdl>

    <rss name="ScottGu" url="http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/rss.aspx" />

</rssdl>

This will then automatically generate and build a RSS channel proxy into your project for you to use (no command line tool usage required).

RSS Publishing Support

The RSS Toolkit also adds support for easily and efficiently publishing RSS feeds from an ASP.NET 2.0 application. For example, to build an RSS feed on your site with it you can now do the following:

Step 1) Add a .rss sample definition file to your app_code directory that provides some sample schema for what you want the RSS feed to look like. For example, a Sample5.rss file like so:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>

<rss version="2.0">

Note that all operations within the RSS handler are strongly typed (meaning you’ll get intellisense support, and a compile error if you mistype something).

Step 3) When you hit the URL to the above handler you’ll then get back an RSS XML feed that you can easily subscribe to:

Note above how the channel item paths are fully qualified in the output RSS XML, but are using the “~” syntax in the .ashx handler. The RSS toolkit adds a nice feature which is the ability for a developer to use the “~” syntax to automatically fix up fully qualified path statements from the channel handler (that way the paths will be correct regardless of whatever server or virtual directory hierarchy the application is deployed on).

Personalized RSS Feed Integration with ASP.NET Authentication System

One of the tricks people are doing these days with RSS is to enable people to subscribe to feeds that are personalized for them. They often do this by adding a query-string parameter to the RSS feed that contains a unique identifier to map the URL to a specific account name on the server (allowing a user for example to publish and subscribe to their private calendar or task-list or contact-list information).

The RSS Toolkit allows you to easily build these types of apps and integrate them with the ASP.NET membership and authentication system. Note how in the handler above there is a “username” parameter to the PopulateChannel method. ASP.NET will look for an encrypted username value on the incoming RSS feed URL, and automatically decrypt and pass the username to this method when it is supplied (you could then write code within this method to hit a database and pull back only the items for that particular user).

To embed the encrypted user-name within the RSS feed URL, you can either get the value via an API call, or generate the RSS URL link using the new declarative RSSHyperlink control and setting the IncludeUserName=”true” property to true:

<RssToolKit:RssHyperLink runat="server" IncludeUserName="True" NavigateUrl="~/scenario6.ashx">Personalized RSS Feed Sample</RssToolKit:RssHyperLink>

When a user clicks on this feed it will include their username encrypted within the URL. When they copy/paste the feed link into a blog reader (for example: to subscribe to it), it will then remember the user’s identity and allow them to always have a personalized view of the data.

Automatic Caching of RSS Feeds

The RSS Toolkit automatically includes built-in caching logic so that RSS feed data is cached locally instead of fetched each time it is accessed/used. The RSS Toolkit supports caching this information both in-memory, as well as persistently to disk (for example: to survive worker process restarts or application resets).

The benefit of this built-in caching integration is that you can efficiently subscribe and pull RSS data from a variety of remote sources without having to worry about your server blocking on remote network calls all the time. Note that the RSS toolkit by default uses an RSS channel’s TTL setting to control the cache duration semantics for you.

Summary

The new ASP.NET RSS Toolkit provides a ton of cool RSS functionality to take advantage of, and allows you to easily integrate RSS within both your sites and applications. RSS is no longer just about blogging – it is now a super common data format for people to publish and subscribe to lots of different types of information (for example: check out this sample I built using the December CTP build of Atlas for a sample “Ajax Task List App” that publishes to-do items using RSS).

You can download the RSS Toolkit from here. Best of all it is free, and all of the Toolkit’s source code is included with the sample. It includes a number of great scenario samples that you can walkthrough to quickly learn how to use it.

The RSS Toolkit has been written to work in medium trust security scenarios – so you can run it on shared hosting servers (note: to consume remote RSS feeds the hosted server will need to allow remote out-bound http requests).

There is something bugging me lately that I just can't get my mind around... I think, personally, that I may have made an assumptive leap about Web 2.0 in the classroom. I was so excited about the potential and my ability to bring it to teachers to use in the classroom that I may have errored and made the assumption that most teachers know what this stuff is already and are just waiting for someone (me) to show them HOW to use it in the classroom. However, the more I teach Web 2.0 the more I see this example:

ME: "So, how many of you are using Web 2.0 tools?"

Them: {insert sound of crickets chirping here}

ME: "How many of you know what Web 2.0 tools ARE?"

Them: {more crickets}

See my dilemma?

When you have a full day curriculum set up around teaching HOW to use a tool and the people you are teaching don't really even know WHAT the tool IS, you have a problem.

See, my assumption (which I wholly and completely take responsibility for) was based on my formative discussions with teachers about Web 2.0 tools. All of these early discussions were very positive and motivated our team to begin development of our class immediately. The problem with this was that the people we were talking to were those on the cutting edge of this technology. We call them "early adopters". You know them. They are also the ones standing at the front of the lines at midnight to get the first copy of that new software or other toy...?

But now, in order to do each of these major tools justice, that half day class has bloated to what could potentially be a 3 day camp. When we do presentations at schools about Web 2.0 tools we have to be extremely careful that we don't completely overwhelm people with the volumes of information we have gathered and end up scaring them off instead of getting them involved... In all honesty I think that we could easily break each topic out now into it's own half to full day class (blogs, wikis, podcasting, digital storytelling, social networks, social bookmarking and using RSS, interactive websites, etc.) but now I wonder if even THAT would be too much...

I guess it all goes back to my "How do you eat an elephant" mentality for developing classes. Now that I have had quite a bit of time to research each of these tools and really understand how they work, I realize that I don't have an elephant... I have a whole herd. And I'm not sure which one to eat first...:)

And then what about the "how do I get this past my tech coordinator" elephant... or the "how do I convince my administrator that this is safe and useful" elephant... or, as I am discovering more and more, the "what the heck are you talking about?" elephant...

I think I need to back off and re-approach this.

So tell me educators and librarians out there in blogland, what do YOU want to know?

September in Köln am NoseRub DevCamp teilzunehmen.

Was ist NoseRub?

Hands-on für Developer.
