• Gràcies a una feina, he redescobert les eines de revisió i comentaris de PDF que porta l'Adobe Reader. Fins ara no me n'havia sortit, però aquest cop he vist que han millorat i si els documents vénen ben preparats per editar-los s'hi poden fer força coses i les indicacions queden prou clares. De tota manera, continuo amb la sensació que el Reader per a Mac no és precisament un prodigi d'estabilitat, i seguiré tenint ben a mà l'Skim per a aquesta mena de coses. I per descomptat, ara com ara cap dels dos no es pot comparar en claredat i eficàcia als símbols de correcció tipogràfica i el bolígraf de tota la vida (entre altres coses, perquè anar obrint i tancant comentaris i notetes és lent a no poder més).
• També he afegit a les adreces d'interès del navegador Lexicool, un cercador de diccionaris i glossaris disponibles a Internet, classificats per diccionaris i temes. Inclou tant vocabularis consultables en línia com d'altres que cal descarregar. Ara que hi penso, aquesta mena de cercadors donarien per fer un post… Apuntat.
• Mentrestant, vaig mirant quina pot ser la millor manera de tenir endreçada i a mà tot d'informació d'Internet que vaig recollint per a un projecte gros que tinc a les mans (próximamente en sus librerías, si Déu vol). Dubto si em va millor una llibreta de retalls a Google Notebook, un grapat de marcadors a Delicious, anar desant documents a una carpeta del disc dur o alguna combinació de tot plegat.

Do you have a video file you can't play on your windows computer? Here's a great and free web tool (in beta right now), called Zamzar. Convert it to the popular .wma from .avi. .mov, .vob and more. Also available is the ability to convert YouTube and other popular video sites so they will play on your iPod or other mp3 player. Also supported is converting videos for use on your smart phones.

For working with documents, Zamzar will take a .pdf file and convert it to a .doc file for you. What a time saver if you need to do some editing on a document. Ever get a Microsoft Publisher document and don't have the program? Just convert it into a format your computer has and you're all set.

Zamzar has a very long list of document types they handle - from Office 2007 to WordPerfect and Works. Here's a link to all the various file formats currently supported.

There is no software to download. You don't even have to sign up for an account to convert a file. Go to the site, upload the file you want to convert, tell Zamzar what you want to convert it to, enter in your email address and you'll get an email within a few minutes to go and download it.

There are size limits to the free account. You can upgrade to a paid account and not see any ads and size limits are increased, depending upon the level you choose (from $7/month to $49/month).

Niektórzy nazywają to magią, inni wrodzonym talentem. Prawda jednak jak zwykle leży po środku. Sztuka sprzedaży nie jest bowiem czymś, z czym się rodzimy. Nie jest także czymś nadprzyrodzonym. A mimo to znasz zapewne wielu ludzi o których myślisz sobie czasami "Kurcze, jak on to robi?". I marzysz, aby być taki jak oni. Może już najwyższy czas na spełnienie marzeń?

Zacznijmy od pewnego, niezaprzeczalnego faktu. Sprzedawcami jesteśmy wszyscy - czy Ci się to podoba, czy nie. W szkole sprzedawaliśmy naszą wiedzę za stosowne oceny - w tym wypadku naszym klientem był nauczyciel. W pracy natomiast sprzedajemy nasz czas pracodawcy - który suma sumarum także jest naszym klientem. Nieprawdopodobne, zgodzisz się?

Na czym więc polega sprzedaż?

Sztuka sprzedaży przydaje się więc wszędzie tam, gdzie mamy kontakt z ludźmi. Gdzie musimy wykonać pewną usługę - sprzedać coś, czym dysponujemy. Problem jednak pojawia się wówczas, gdy nasz klient ma wątpliwości. Czy aby na pewno chce kupić ten produkt, tą usługę? Czy chce kupić właśnie od nas? A może skorzystać z oferty konkurencji?

Wszędzie tam, gdzie pojawia się popyt oraz podaż - pojawia się również konkurencja. Jest to całkowicie naturalna kolej rzeczy. A podobno nie ma ludzi niezastąpionych. Ty jednak, dzięki publikacji "Jak oczarować klienta" masz możliwość zbliżenia się do granicy bycia niezastąpionym!

I also have a hunch that Palin and Giuliani's attacks on community organizers are also going to fire up a very important constituency on Obama's behalf. A new Facebook group called "We are all community organizers" got launched last night, and its membership have been growing rapidly. The danger in stirring up this particular nest is that community organizers are network hubs, and while not all of them are involved in electoral work (often their jobs prevent direct partisan activity), this direct attack on their dignity may well push many of them into taking leaves of absence and going to work to help Obama.

The Obama campaign's own email response was also interesting, in this respect. David Plouffe wrote:

I wasn't planning on sending you something tonight. But if you saw what I saw from the Republican convention, you know that it demands a response.

I saw John McCain's attack squad of negative, cynical politicians. They lied about Barack Obama and Joe Biden, and they attacked you for being a part of this campaign.

But worst of all -- and this deserves to be noted -- they insulted the very idea that ordinary people have a role to play in our political process.

You know that despite what John McCain and his attack squad say, everyday people have the power to build something extraordinary when we come together. Make a donation of $5 or more right now to remind them.

Both Rudy Giuliani and Sarah Palin specifically mocked Barack's experience as a community organizer on the South Side of Chicago more than two decades ago, where he worked with people who had lost jobs and been left behind when the local steel plants closed.

Let's clarify something for them right now.

Community organizing is how ordinary people respond to out-of-touch politicians and their failed policies. [Emphasis in original]

And it's no surprise that, after eight years of George Bush, millions of people have found that by coming together in their local communities they can change the course of history. That promise is what our campaign has been about from the beginning.

Throughout our history, ordinary people have made good on America's promise by organizing for change from the bottom up. Community organizing is the foundation of the civil rights movement, the women's suffrage movement, labor rights, and the 40-hour workweek. And it's happening today in church basements and community centers and living rooms across America.

Meanwhile, we still haven't gotten a single idea during the entire Republican convention about the economy and how to lift a middle class so harmed by the Bush-McCain policies.

Etc. You get the idea. An old friend of mine, Janice Fine, is a veteran community organizer, and she uses the following role-play when she teaches other organizers how to organize. She pulls a person from the audience and then starts pushing them aggressively, while asking the person and the audience, "What do you do when you're being pushed around by a bully? What do you do? Huh?" Sooner or later someone answers, "You get your friends to help fight back." And a few people walk up to help push Janice back.

That's what's happening now. Sarah Palin's elevation first generated a big response for McCain, but the Republican attacks on the heart of Obama's campaign -- community organizing -- is going to foster a huge response. I predict Obama will raise $10 million online today and tomorrow.

Departemen Keuangan kembali berubah! Kali ini dengan Peraturan Menteri Keuangan Nomor 100/PMK.01/2008 tentang Organisasi dan Tata Kerja Departemen Keuangan-nya, Departemen Keuangan bermetamorfosis. //Emang kupu-kupu, Bang?// Dengan semangat menyempurnakan organisasi, meningkatkan efektivitas dan kinerja organisasi, PMK ini mengantarkan susunan organisasi Departemen Keuangan Republik Indonesia (Depkeu) menjadi tetap terdiri dari 20 (dua puluh) unit. Jumlah yang sama dari PMK mengenai Organisasi dan Tata Kerja Depkeu sebelumnya (PMK Nomor 131/PMK.01/2006). //Loh, terus apanya yang berubah, Bang?//

Perubahan organisasi yang kentara terlihat pada struktur organisasi Direktorat Jenderal Perbendaharaan, misalnya. Ada unit direktorat baru yang merupakan gabungan dari dua direktorat sebelumnya, yaitu Direktorat Sistem Manajemen Investasi yang merupakan gabungan dari Direktorat Pengelolaan Penerusan Pinjaman dan Direktorat Pengelolaan Dana Investasi. Agaknya direktorat yang terakhir ini merupakan pecahan dari Direktorat Sistem Perbendaharaan menilik pada beberapa kemiripan //atau tumpang-tindih?// tugas pokok dan fungsi keduanya. //Dulu memang sempat kudengar kabar akan adanya pemekaran ini.//

Badan Pendidikan dan Pelatihan Keuangan (BPPK) juga terlihat berubah. Perubahan paling mencolok adalah dengan munculnya Pusat Pendidikan dan Pelatihan Kekayaan Negara dan Perimbangan Keuangan (Pusdiklat Kekayaan Negara dan Perimbangan Keuangan) dalam struktur organisasinya. Pusdiklat yang bertugas membina pendidikan, pelatihan, dan penataran keuangan negara di bidang kekayaan negara dan perimbangan keuangan ini dibentuk mengingat urgensi dan kebutuhan akan SDM yang ahli di bidang kekayaan negara dan perimbangan keuangan, khususnya bagi pegawai di Direktorat Jenderal Kekayaan Negara dan Direktorat Jenderal Perimbangan Keuangan.

Di samping pembentukan Pusdiklat Kekayaan Negara dan Perimbangan Keuangan tersebut, terdapat perubahan nama pada unit instansi di bawah BPPK. Antara lain Pusdiklat Pengembangan SDM dari semula bernama Pusdiklat Pegawai. Perubahan nama ini terkait dengan penajaman fungsi Pusdiklat ini bahwa selain melakukan pembinaan diklat yang berhubungan dengan kepegawaian seperti penjenjangan pangkat dan jabatan, Pusdiklat ini juga melakukan penataran di bidang pengembangan SDM serta melakukan urusan administrasi pendidikan pascasarjana bagi pegawai di Depkeu. Agaknya perubahan ini juga terkait dengan perubahan nama Biro Kepegawaian menjadi Biro SDM pada Sekretariat Jenderal Depkeu (menunjuk PMK Nomor 54/PMK.01/2007 tentang Perubahan Atas PMK Nomor 131/PMK.01/2006). //Yah, mungkin biar keren saja kedengarannya. Biar agak fantastis, gitu. Hoho.//

Perubahan nama juga terjadi pada Pusdiklat Anggaran yang diganti menjadi Pusdiklat Anggaran dan Perbendaharaan. Hal ini mengingat adanya "aksi protes" oleh Direktorat Jenderal Perbendaharaan yang dulunya merupakan pemekaran dari Direktorat Jenderal Anggaran seiring dengan perubahan dalam Depkeu tempo dulu akibat adanya reformasi penyempurnaan manajemen keuangan Negara di Indonesia.

Pada struktur organisasi Sekretariat BPPK, Bidang Bina Program, yang tugasnya melaksanakan penyiapan koordinasi, perumusan dan evaluasi rencana strategik serta rencana dan program kerja BPPK, dihapuskan. Penghapusan ini dikarenakan tugas tersebut dilimpahkan kepada masing-masing Pusdiklat di bawah BPPK. Kemudian muncul Bidang Teknologi Informasi dan Komunikasi. Bidang ini memiliki tugas melaksanakan penyusunan rancangan, pengelolaan, pengembangan dan pemutakhiran sistem, data, struktur dan infrastruktur informasi pendidikan, pelatihan dan penataran keuangan negara serta hubungan masyarakat.

Masih ada beberapa perubahan lain sebenarnya. Namun mengingat //Lagi-lagi mengingat mulu, Bang.// Farijs van Java sedang sibuk puasa, cukup sekian dulu, ya.

I installed Acrobat Reader 9 and to my surprise, it has ballooned up to 203 MB. Reader 8 was a stout 86 MB. Gaining 117 MB?! That is just unacceptable.

What the hell kind of code are the Adobe developers feeding Reader? It didn’t need an additional 117 MB – it was working just fine.

So what do you get for your additional 117? A whole ton of spyware! This is typical of Adobe. They think they have got the market cornered on PDF readers, not to mention a bunch of other software – Dreamweaver, Photoshop, RoboHelp, Camtasia. The list is long and ugly.

Now I will cut Adobe a break – their Dreamweaver product is very good, but its price is phenomenally huge. CoffeeCup has an html editor just as good, and for the fair price of $49. Yep, you read that right - $49 and life-time upgrades. Now that is customer oriented service.

And everybody knows PhotoShop is dynamite. You have to be rocket scientist to get everything out of it, but it is a very good application.

The real shame is that the average computer user – the person who just sees the pc as a tool to get something done – is oblivious to the encroachment of Adobe.

The real solution to this bloated mess is to un-install Reader 9 and install Foxit Reader 2.3. Why? Because Foxit Reader is only 6 MB on your hard drive! That isn’t the only benefit – it is lightning fast! (Granted, Reader 9 improved in speed – obviously the Adobe developers could hear the angry cries – but 8 is still a lumbering elephant). Lastly, it has a tab feature that makes viewing more than one document wonderfully easy. Try that with your Adobe Reader.

You may be asking, "why do I even have Adobe Reader in the first place?"  Well, because Adobe made a deal with old Lucifer himself which allows them the first dibs on all new computers.

Now if you install Foxit, click on the  button and not the 'Try It Free' button (the TIF button is one of those buy something else and we’ll give the whole Foxit suite). The first bullet point on the download page should suffice. (If you have Vista, this is something you definitely want to explore.)

I probably don't use a lot of those things listed above, but I'm sure they are good. WARNING: don't use the Commenting Tools - Foxit lets you use them, gives you a long warning, then puts a watermark at the top your page. It's pretty ugly - see for yourself:

If you buy Foxit Pro, that will go away.

I don't edit a lot of PDFs so that watermark is not going to be a problem.

A bound copy of the score was thrust into the hands of an ungracious Keith Jarrett after about 2 hours of waiting in the rain at the end of a concert in London a number of years ago.  (Ok, perhaps he was exhausted, but still.) It had my number.  I saw him shuffle through the score whilst being driven off in his chauffeur-driven limo but that was it.  I also called his then agent who was sadly a little curt and showed no interest.

Quite a few Keith Jarrett followers have now asked for this since I ditched my old website, and so here it is.
